Herbert was one of eight sons of William and Emma. Three of his brothers were also in the military: Arthur was in the army and was killed in action, Edwin was in the army, was a German prisoner of war, but survived, and Oscar was in the Royal Navy and survived.

Herbert Robert HOGG, son of William Germany HOGG (c. 1847- ) and Emma CLARKE (c. 1850-c. 1924), was born circa 1873 in Morningthorpe, Norfolk. He was baptised on 25 May 1873 in Thetford, Norfolk - at Methodist Circuit, parents William and Emma. On 22 February 1894 Herbert enrolled in the Royal Marines Light Infantry, and demobilising on 25.04.1919. He died on 17 January 1952 - aged 72 years. He had his estate probated on 19 March 1952 in London - “HOGG Herbert Robert of Fairview Redgrave-road South Lopham Norfolk died 17 January1952 Probate London 19 March [1952] to Mary Kate Hogg widow and Reginald William Eades solicitor. Effects £8704 19s. 4d.”
